At the Music & Technology department of the University of the Arts Utrecht (HKU), students have access to the Blackbox multimedia studio, where they can work with the 4DSOUND system as part of their creative practice. Additional facilities include a surround production studio and a studio equipped with an octophonic setup.
4DSOUND is integrated into the curriculum and available to both Bachelor and Master students, offering the opportunity to explore sound as a spatial, immersive medium within their studies.
The system features 16 omnidirectional speakers arranged across two layers - floor and ceiling - and a subwoofer. The Blackbox supports hybrid setups, enabling the integration of additional speakers and extended configurations. It also invites interactive experimentation through sensor input and the integration of other media alongside 4DSOUND.
As part of the Spatial Audio programme, students can engage with 4DSOUND in both artistic and research contexts.
Please note: the Bachelor programmes are taught in Dutch. Master’s students interested in working with 4DSOUND are encouraged to contact the university directly to explore available options.
