Deep Seeing Currents

ARTIS Aquarium, Amsterdam - 2026

Deep seeing currents is a permanent immersive installation by Olafur Eliasson, commissioned by ARTIS for the historic rotunda of the ARTIS Aquarium in Amsterdam. Developed in collaboration with 4DSOUND and MONOM, the work invites visitors on an imagined descent into the deep sea, exploring a world largely beyond human perception.

Inside a darkened space, visitors are immersed in a composition of 55 authentic underwater recordings, ranging from cracking ice and whale calls to human activity at sea and geological processes deep beneath the ocean surface. Using 4DSOUND spatial audio technology, with spatial composition by MONOM, sounds move through and around the audience. Subtle flashes of light and physical vibrations extend the experience beyond hearing, creating a multisensory environment that explores our perception of space, depth and the natural world.

Technical Setup
The space features a 4DSOUND system comprising 20 OmniDrive loudspeakers in three vertical layers, custom-built subwoofers, and a vibroacoustic floor.
